Epilepsy Fellowship
Trinity Health Grand Rapids, Medical Education
Trinity Health Grand Rapids, Medical Education offers a 1-year ACGME accredited epilepsy fellowship. This fellowship places an emphasis on producing excellent clinically-orientated faculty.
Hauenstein Neurosciences at Trinity Health Grand Rapids is the first comprehensive neuroscience center established in West Michigan. It is the largest and most experienced team of nationally recognized neurological experts in West Michigan — fellowship trained physicians specializing in the areas of general neurology, epilepsy, spine and back, movement disorders sleep disorders, stroke/vascular neurology, dementia, neuromuscular, multiple sclerosis, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-rehabilitation, neuro-palliative care, sports neurology, neurosurgery and neuropsychology.
It has a busy neuroscience inpatient service, including stroke (DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center) and epilepsy care (Level IV epilepsy care) and interventional neuroradiology. We operate a six-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), supported by an EMU monitoring station that includes two dedicated workstations for fellows, in addition to those used by our team of 11 EEG technicians.
Fellows have access to a robust volume of surgical cases, including 1–2 stereotactic electroencephalography (SEEG) procedures per month. A weekly multidisciplinary surgical conference brings together epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists, and MEG specialists to review and discuss cases. Fellows also have the opportunity to participate in advanced treatment modalities, including laser ablation and neurostimulation therapies such as vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), responsive neurostimulation (RNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS).
Our Program AIMs:
The fellowship program aims:
- To prepare fellowship graduates for independent practice in the evaluation and diagnosis of patients with seizure disorders;
- To impart upon the fellows clinical competencies to ensure their success in future careers in either academic or private practice;
- To prepare the fellows to be the educators of the future to train medical students, residents, and other health professionals;
- To instill the habits of professionalism and create life-long learners.
