ANN ARBOR, Mich. (June 13, 2024) – Trinity Health Ann Arbor successfully completed a large-scale active assailant drill on Wednesday, June 12th, in collaboration with Washtenaw County law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel.
This comprehensive exercise evaluated the preparedness and response of all participating agencies. It focused on inter-agency communication, collaboration, and the swift neutralization of a threat, followed by the efficient transport and treatment of simulated victims in the Emergency Room and Operating Room.
"Active shooter situations are a significant concern for communities nationwide," said Alonzo Lewis, president of Trinity Health Ann Arbor and Trinity Health Livingston. "We prioritize the safety of our patients, staff, and visitors. Drills like this allow us to strengthen our relationships with first responders, refine emergency protocols, and ensure a coordinated response to a mass casualty event."
Area agencies participating in the drill included:
- Ann Arbor Emergency Management
- Ann Arbor Police Department
- District 1 Regional Medical Response Coalition (D1RMRC)
- Eastern Michigan University, Department of Public Safety
- Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA)
- Livingston County Health Department
- Pittsfield Township Fire Department
- Pittsfield Township Police Department
- Region 2 South Healthcare Coalition (R2S)
- Superior Township Fire Department
- Trinity Health Ann Arbor
- Washtenaw County Health Department
- Washtenaw County Emergency Management
- Washtenaw Metro Dispatch
- Washtenaw County Sheriff
- Washtenaw Metro SWAT
- Ypsilanti City Fire Department
- Ypsilanti Township Fire
The scenario involved a simulated active assailant targeting victims within the hospital's Administrative Building. To prioritize safety, the drill took place in a closed, non-patient care area, involving only credentialed staff and volunteer actors.
The exercise assessed the hospital's mass casualty response plan, involving departments like the Emergency Department, Trauma, Surgery, Security, and Hospital Incident Command. Local law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel from Washtenaw County actively participated alongside hospital staff and volunteers.
The drill also simulated law enforcement's response to neutralize the threat and secure the building before EMS transported simulated casualties to the Emergency Department.
